Virginia
Lay of the Land in Virginia in 2018
The overall landscape of individual / family health insurance in Virginia in 2018 is grim.
Several carriers have left the state for 2018 (Innovation Health, Aetna, United Healthcare). The remaining carriers have raised premiums by upwards of 80%. If you are subsidy-eligible, you will feel the effects less dramatically.
In much of the state, there will be only one carrier. Refer to the map below.
With the exception of the CareFirst service area in northern Virginia (see below), there are no PPO plans available in the state. All 2018 plans — from all carriers except Carefirst — are HMO plans. HMOs offer limited provider networks and no out-of-network coverage except in the event of a true emergency.
If you:
- are self-employed or own a small business;
- live in the greater northern Virginia area; and
- are not eligible for a subsidy in 2018
…we may be able to set up a group health plan. Please see here for more information and be in touch right away if this may work for you.
