Most Americans* must have health insurance or pay a penalty – it’s the law. (Although the penalty for not having health insurance was eliminated in 2019, the law still stands! And if you live in DC, the penalty is still in effect.)
If you don’t get health insurance through your employer, you can buy it for yourself and/or your family on the individual health insurance market.
Note – if you are self-employed or own a small business, ask us if a group health plan may be an option for you.
Collecting a Subsidy
Depending on your income and the size of your household, you may be able to collect a subsidy to help you pay for your coverage.
If you qualify for a subsidy, you must purchase coverage on your state’s health insurance exchange.
When you buy a plan on the exchange it is called on-exchange or marketplace coverage. Some people call it “Obamacare”. This refers to the Affordable Care Act – the law which established the exchanges.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) was passed in March of 2021. The ARPA expanded the criteria for subsidy eligibility. Regardless of your income, you will not pay more than 8.5% of your household income in health insurance premiums for a silver reference plan.
