We have just received word that Anthem will stop selling individual health insurance in Virginia in 2018. This means that if you are covered by an Anthem Affordable Care Act compliant individual / family health plan, your plan is ending on December 31, 2017. You can continue to use your plan through the end of this year.
However, you will need to find new coverage effective January 1, 2018.
We are monitoring the situation closely, and will be in touch with more details as they become available. In the meantime, here is a link to an an FAQ sheet directly from Anthem.
Note: You are not impacted if you:
- Are enrolled in a Grandfathered Anthem plan (purchased before March, 2010)
- Receive your health insurance benefits through your employer
- Are covered by an Anthem Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan
- Are covered by Anthem individual dental, vision, or life insurance.

Jon –
You helped me find an Anthem policy for my son John last year when he had to come off a Tricare continued benefits program – has worked out well.
Is Optima the only company selling individual policies in Henrico/Richmond counties where John is a student? Is it a good company?
Thanks very much.

Hi Jim, thanks for being in touch. We don’t know yet what options there will be for individual coverage in VA in 2018. We expect final plan and pricing details closer to the start of open enrollment which begins on November 1. We will stay in touch until then, but please feel free to reach out to us if you have any specific questions!
