If you purchased a health insurance policy under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) while living in one state and subsequently move to another state, you will need to cancel coverage in your old state and purchase a plan in your new state.
The good news is you don’t have to worry about purchasing your new coverage during open enrollment dates.
That’s because moving to a new state is a qualifying event which triggers a special enrollment period.
In the case of a permanent move, you have 60 days from the date of the move to complete enrollment in a new plan. Remember, if you enroll on or before the 15th of the month, your new coverage will be effective on the first day of the next month. If you enroll between the 16th and the last day of the month, your coverage will be effective on the first day of the second following month.
