If you are currently covered by an individual CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance policy (vs. one you get through your employer) that you purchased or after March 23, 2010, we have some critical — and time sensitive* — information for you.
(Update October 31, 2013 – deadline to re-enroll has been extended to November 22, 2013)
CareFirst policyholders either already have received or will receive soon a letter from CareFirst explaining the options for complying with the new health care law — the Affordable Care Act (also known as “Obamacare”).

Option 1 – Apply for a new ACA-Compliant Plan Review the “Plans at a Glance” chart included with your letter. Then visit CareFirst online to compare plans and rates. By selecting a 2014 start date, you can review and apply for an ACA-compliant plan now. Note: You will have the opportunity to indicate whether or not you believe you are eligible for a subsidy, but you must purchase insurance through your state’s exchange to receive the subsidy. |
Option 2 – Remain in Your Current Plan Longer You can cancel your current plan and re-enroll in the same coverage with an effective date of December 1, 2013. This allows you to keep your current coverage, at December 2013 rates, through November 30, 2014. At that time, you will need to choose an ACA-compliant plan. This is known as early renewal and simply delays the requirement to comply with the law. Click here to learn why early renewal may be a good choice.
