The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Makes Health Insurance Mandatory for Most Americans Beginning January 1, 2014.
Although January 1 has passed, there is still time to purchase health insurance for 2014 and avoid a penalty tax. But you must enroll by March 31.
After that date, your next chance will be in November 2014, when open enrollment for 2015 coverage begins (unless you have a qualifying event before then that makes you eligible outside of open enrollment — e.g., change in job status, change in family status, etc.)
Under the provisions of ACA:
- anybody can buy health insurance — even if you have pre-existing conditions or are in poor health
- you can not be charged a higher premium for current or pre-existing health conditions
- your adult children can remain on your health insurance policy through age 26
- you will be covered for preventative care
- you will have coverage for 10 essential health benefits
- you may be eligible for a subsidy, depending on your income (refer to the chart below to learn if you may qualify)*
If you are not eligible for a subsidy, then you will purchase individual or family health insurance “off-exchange”, in the private marketplace.
